We’re Now the Digital Agency with Zest

The market research we conducted towards the end of 2009 suggested that the best place for hairyLemon to position itself in the market is as a “digital agency”. We’ve made the change based partly on feedback from our US clients, where the term digital agency is now becoming widely used.

Trend research in the US by Forrester reflects a shift away from “interactive agencies” and “traditional advertising agencies” towards the digital agency model, which is expected to dominate the market within 10 years.

"We see digital becoming the backbone of marketing and technology becoming so vital that everyone needs digital capabilities," said Sean Corcoran, an analyst at Forrester. "Everyone is coming from a different strength. Everyone is trying to add the other's capabilities."

From our perspective, it accurately reflects the range of services we provide, including graphic design, branding and online marketing – all of which are integrated seamlessly into the website design and development process.

So you may notice that all our branding on the new building and our email signatures reflects the change – we are proud to be hairyLemon, the digital agency with zest.

It’s been a huge month at the Lemon and we are looking forward now to maximising the benefits of our new work environment.

How Does Your Site Look on a Mobile?

With the widespread popularity of the iPhone, Blackberry and other web-enabled mobile phones, ensuring your website is easy and fast to load through a mobile phone is becomingly increasingly important, particularly for businesses in sectors like tourism and retail. Customers for tourism products and services are frequently on the move or away from home, and retail customers are often looking for information like location details, phone numbers and pricing to do comparisons as they shop.

Google Analytics is now showing stats for visitors to your site who are using mobile devices, which is worth having a look at to see how many potential customers are accessing (or trying to access) your site on their mobiles.

So how do you optimise your existing site for mobile phone interfaces?
For businesses with Joomla! websites, adding functionality for mobiles is a relatively straightforward process.

One example is US based Cupertino Electric Inc who wanted a mobile version of their site. We created this using a Joomla component that is compatible with a number of different mobile browsers. The component uses a specific mobile template, which makes it easy to cut out unnecessary information from the main site.

Critical points for creating a mobile optimised site:

  1. Minimise or remove anything that is not vital
  2. Focus on getting the customer the information they want in as few clicks as possible
  3. Be aware that customers are paying for data as they navigate your site, so keep it simple
  4. Ensure that the mobile site maintains your branding
  5. Make it easy and fast for your customers to use - keeping in mind why they are using their phone to visit your site
  6. Make sure your most important information is top of page
  7. Avoid requiring text entry where possible

If you have a web enabled mobile, you might like to check out a few other popular sites that have been optimised for mobile browsers:

Universal search results in Google take up approx 25% of the results. This includes videos, images, news, blogs and local listings. These are pushing the regular organic results down the page so are definitely something every business needs to make the most of. Welcome Tim Medcalf, Integrator

Tim Medcalf Tim is the latest member of our rapidly expanding team. He has joined hairyLemon as our new junior front end developer, fresh from completing Natcoll’s web development course at the end of 2009.

Like a surprising number of techno-pros, Tim has musical talents that include playing guitar for real, as well as rocking it out on Guitar Hero.

His other passion is cars and although he insists he's not a boy racer, he is currently the proud owner of a Mitsubishi Lancer – you be the judge.

Profile: hairyLemon Technical Team

Our in-house tech team have been heroes for the company in the last six weeks, as they prepared our new premises for the big move. Re-cabling and setting up networks and the new server room to ensure a seamless transition when we shifted from Riccarton Road was a major project and kept the guys working some long hours.

When they are not busy relocating the Lemons, the technicians, ably lead by Connon Daly are kept extremely busy with their client base, providing a range of networking and computer hardware and software services.

Perhaps the most important service they offer is peace of mind to our clients – taking care of everything from new hardware requirements, through network set up and support, project management for office relocations or setups, installing up to date security for your systems and ongoing maintenance.

The tech boys are the one hairyLemon division who are regularly called on to work outside of normal business hours and at locations all over New Zealand.

If you would like to call on the services of our technical team, please contact Connon on 363 1873
